________

Surface Tension is a new body of optically-charged photographic works which transform the camera from a device of documentation into a conduit for painting with light.

The camera is often seen as an objective, impartial eye, but like human perception, is flawed and full of fallacies. In this new technique, Smith embraces this instability by playfully layering surface and light within the image plane, destabilising the camera’s visual input. Here, colour does not simply rest upon a surface; it spills, resists, and coalesces for a fleeting moment before being preserved in ink.
