Anne Mestitz is a Hobart-based interdisciplinary multimedia artist. Her practice focuses on geometric object-paintings that blend painting, sculpture, and installation. Through this hybrid approach, Anne Mestitz explores space, structure, and perception using form and colour.
She earned a PhD in 2011 and went on to teach Sculpture and Drawing at the Tasmanian College of the Arts. Her commitment to arts education continues to inform her studio work and curatorial projects.
In 2018, Mestitz curated Beyond the Field (still) across two venues in Hobart. The exhibition marked 50 years since the National Gallery of Victoria’s groundbreaking show The Field. This project reflected her interest in revisiting and reinterpreting modernist legacies through a contemporary lens.
Her studio and curatorial practices are closely linked. Both are guided by conceptual frameworks and a deep interest in formal experimentation. Titles like sight-reading, vertical montage, and tinged by gravity serve as conceptual starting points. While the work often evolves beyond the title, the language helps anchor the initial process.
Mestitz typically creates in series, producing groups of three to five works. Occasionally, she develops standalone pieces that respond to specific ideas or materials. Her visual vocabulary spans colour, shape, tone, weight, opacity, rhythm, gravity, and light. These elements allow her to examine spatial tensions and the physical experience of viewing.
Her studio functions as both refuge and engine room. It is filled with carefully chosen materials and objects she collects for their potential. This environment suspends time, letting new ideas emerge organically without pressure.
