Ungud and Wallanganda at the Birth of Oceanus
90x120x3cm
Oil paint on canvas
‘Ungud is the Wunambal people’s snake god who is sometimes female; she can make rain fall. Having power over rainbows and fertility, she is of earth and water. In the beginning, when only the sky and the earth existed, Ungud lived underground as a giant python. At night, Ungud and Wallanganda, the sky deity, create living beings through their dreams.
As dusk falls Ungud and Wallaganda dream. They dream of Oceanus, who is the Titan god of the river Okeanos, which encircles the world and connects the earth to the heavens and the underworld. Oceanus is born through their dreaming.’
