Born in 1956 in Crevedia near Bucharest, Romania, Gheorghe has dedicated his life to both the practice and study of painting. He studied painting and restoration at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bucharest from 1976 to 1980 before continuing his career across art education, museum restoration, and graphic arts within major Romanian cultural institutions. His professional experiences included work at the National Museum of History in Romania and the National Museum of Art in Romania, where he developed a deep understanding of historical painting methods and material processes.
This fascination with the traditions and techniques of classical painting evolved into decades of scholarly research into the working methods of the Old Masters. In 2023, Gheorghe completed a doctorate at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, further solidifying his commitment to understanding painting as both a technical and philosophical discipline. He now lives and works in Vienna.
Central to Gheorghe’s artistic practice is the idea of painting as a process of searching rather than answering. His works begin with questions posed by life itself — questions about humanity, society, morality, spirituality, and existence. Rather than resolving these ideas through literal storytelling, he transforms them into layered visual reflections that encourage contemplation and emotional engagement. For Gheorghe, painting is less about explanation and more about revealing the ongoing struggle to understand the complexities of human experience.
His imagery often emerges from observations of contemporary society, yet the works avoid becoming tied to any specific moment, location, or individual identity. Figures, environments, and symbolic elements appear suspended in ambiguous spaces that feel both familiar and dreamlike. This deliberate universality allows the paintings to move beyond direct representation and enter a more psychological and spiritual realm.
Although recognisable forms frequently appear within his compositions, Gheorghe resists purely illustrative approaches. He avoids relying on decorative aesthetics or superficial visual effects, instead using symbolism, atmosphere, and layered meaning to construct emotionally resonant works. Every painting is intended to carry an inner narrative — one that is open-ended and deeply human. His compositions invite viewers to bring their own interpretations, memories, and emotional experiences into dialogue with the work.
Through this balance of technical mastery, philosophical inquiry, and symbolic storytelling, Gheorghe’s paintings become meditations on the human soul. His practice bridges historical painting traditions with contemporary existential concerns, creating works that are timeless, introspective, and profoundly reflective of the shared emotional landscape of humanity.
“My work always begins with trying to find answers to the questions that life asks me. In the end, you don’t get answers, but paintings that show the efforts to find these answers. My paintings are born from the observation of our society, are reflections, comments, visions, emerged from reality and are thought to have a retroactive effect on reality, how once was the magic. The pictures must don’t be too illustrative, although the forms appear realistic. I definitively don’t want that my paintings are based just on pretty colors and effects. Each picture must tell a story, very symbolically and generally, should don’t be associated with any place, era, or man or woman. The paintings are simply meant to represent the human soul.”
