I’ve always thought that the Greek Gods symbolize aspects of our humanity. They embody ideas which are both intellectual and emotional.
Their corporeal life is mostly idealized in its form. The human body is celebrated and defined by the emotional and rational life within.
As the human form is used to personify these concepts the body takes on the function of a display. It is an adornment; it is the jewellery of the gods. It is a display that takes on the involuntary nature of our physical being, but we can address this by changing our form with adornments that carry the message of how we wish to be seen. Put a serpent on your head or wear a laurel wreath and the world knows who you are.
